UCLA The Haymarket Affair of 1886 Bomb Descriptive Essay

UCLA The Haymarket Affair of 1886 Bomb Descriptive Essay

Question Description

I’m working on a History question and need guidance to help me study.

In this assignment you will imagine that you are journalists living in the late 19th century United States. You are tasked with writing a newspaper article that documents how Americans responded to one of the many history-changing events and trends from 1865 to 1900. You will use primary sources/first-hand accounts from the time period to serve as the building blocks of your news article.

Directions

1. Begin by evaluating how journalists in our time write about current events and how they convey the public’s reaction to those events. If you’re feeling ambitious, you can compare your findings about modern journalism to the style of newspaper articles from the late 19th century by browsing some of the historical newspaper databasesLinks to an external site. on the UC Davis Library website.

2. Choose a set of primary sources from the Digital Public Library of America’s collections (Links to an external site.)to serve as the basis of your news article. You may also include the documents found in the American Yawp Primary Source Reader (Links to an external site.). Determine which topic or event in United States history from 1865 to 1900 your primary sources most accurately represent. Your sources can fit into broad topics such as Reconstruction, The Gilded Age/Industrialization, Labor, or the West, or they might pertain to more specific events, organizations, and movements such as the ratification of the 14th Amendment, the Freedmen’s Bureau, the Haymarket Affair, or the Wounded Knee Massacre. However broad or narrow you define the subject of your news article, you should consult the sections of the textbook and/or any other scholarly literature pertaining to your topic to fill gaps in your knowledge as you write the article.

3. Analyze your primary sources by paying particular attention to quotes, facts, and examples that illustrate an individual or group’s response to, or assessment of, the historical change occurring in their lives. You can compile the best pieces of information and quotes from the documents into a google document or spreadsheet shared with everyone in your group.

4. Write a 300 to 500 word news article using the quotes, relevant facts/dates, and examples from at least two of your primary source documents to construct an accurate and compelling report about your article’s subject matter. Be sure to attribute the information to the sources from which you found them, both in the text of the article and in the footnotes. You may also include images to provide a visual representation of your story for the reader. Since this is a news article, it should include a headline that encapsulate the article’s main focus, a byline that lists the authors (you and your group members’ names), and a lead sentence that captures your readers’ attention and provides the essential facts of the story.

5. Save your article as a PDF and post it in the forum below.
