Background

In our last essay, we considered the impact of an individual’s mindset on their motivation and achievement. We read Carol Dweck’s article “Brainology” and reflected on our own experiences. We learned a great lesson… that a growth mindset can enable a person to succeed.

In this unit, we have broadened our understanding of success by reading Malcolm Gladwell’s book Outliers. In the book, Gladwell argues that an individual’s potential is not limited to their personal merit; rather, extraordinary people are the result of extraordinary circumstances.

This essay is your opportunity to test Gladwell’s theory.

Your Task

Locate an individual who is successful in a particular field. Be sure to choose someone who is a truly exceptional individual, someone so superior that they define their own category of success. We will refer to this person as your subject.

Then, conduct plenty of research on your subject. To do this research, feel free to find information on the internet, watch a movie or documentary, or listen to a podcast. As you research, take notes on the Essay 2 Graphic Organizer in which you match quotes from Gladwell to details from your subject’s biography.

Use your graphic organizer to help you develop your thesis statement.

For this essay, you should answer the writing question: “In what ways does your subject confirm or refute Gladwell’s theory of success?”

In your essay, you’ll argue you whether your subject’s success had to do with the social and external factors that Gladwell discusses, or whether their success was due to the more conventional notion of inherent talent.

How To Do It

In your introduction, share a brief biography of your subject, explain why they are worth writing a paper about, and briefly discuss Gladwell’s general idea. End your introduction with a thesis statement that is a direct answer to the writing question

In your body paragraphs share whether your subject experienced any of the phenomenon Gladwell talks about, such as:

  • The Matthew Effect
  • 10,000 hours of work in order to become proficient
  • advantageous era of birth
  • born in a demographic trough
  • exposure to meaningful work
  • the ability to express to someone what one wants (the presumption of being heard)
  • cultural practices which encouraged success

Think about organizing your paper with one of these points per paragraph.

In your conclusion, tell your reader what they can learn about life and success from Gladwell and the example of your chosen success story.

Criteria for Success

A successful essay is four pages and includes the following:

  • A clear and arguable thesis that expresses either agreement or disagreement with Gladwell and functions as a controlling idea for the essay
  • A four-part introduction that captures reader interest and strongly orients the reader 

  • TEA paragraphs with clearly stated topic sentences that are organized around Gladwell’s points (not chronology), and include evidence from the text (quotes and examples)
  • Careful proofreading
  • Proper MLA formatting and citation
